How to Play Baccarat

• There are three possible outcomes in baccarat: Player win, Banker win, and tie.
• Participants can bet on the Player’s hand, Banker’s hand or on a tie (it should be noted that ‘Banker’ does not refer to the house). Bets must be placed before the cards are dealt.
• Two cards will be dealt to the Player and two to the Banker. When the cards are revealed the point total can be calculated and it determined if there is a winning side at this stage.
• Number cards (2-9) are worth their face value, ace cards are counted as one, while kings, queens and jacks are each worth 10.
• If the total of a hand is more than 10, only the second digit of the total will count. For example, if the total is 15, the value of the hand will in fact be 5.
• If, after the first two cards are dealt, the Player or the Banker has a total of 8 or 9, that is called a ‘natural’ win. Whoever gets closest to 9, wins the hand and the game is over.
• When both the Player and Banker get the same amount it is called a tie and those bets will win.
• The hand continues if there is no ‘natural’ win or tie. At this point a third card may be drawn.
• If the Player has a 6 or 7 total, they stand. If they have a 0 to 5, the Player will draw a third card.
• The Player’s cards will determine the next move of the Banker, and this is where it gets a bit more complicated for the uninitiated! After the third card has been drawn by the Player:
  
  • The Banker stands if they have a 7, 8, or 9.
  • The Banker takes a third card if they have 6 and the Player’s third card is 6-7.
  • The Banker takes a third card if they have 5 and the Player’s third card is 4-7.
  • The Banker takes a third card if they have 4 and the Player’s third card is 2-7.
  • The Banker takes a third card if they have 3 and the Player’s third card was anything other than 8.
  • The Banker takes a third card if they have 0-2.
• Once the final cards have been drawn, the closest to 9 wins the hand.
